Such Friends

From: Jade Rance, 2nd year media student:

I got involved in this project via Jon Hickman, early 2009. Kathleen had approached the department in search for a graphic designer to help layout her book and Jon recommended me.
I have been working on the project continuously since then.

The concept is that it is a scrapbook, with literary information and "tit bits" about authors from around the 19th Century and their relationships and circles of friends.
I have a lot more information of exactly how the book works, but on a basic level I have constructed a way so that it is divided into years, and countries for easy reference. (clearer to see on my templates and drafts)

I have been the sole designer and it has been a very rewarding process to say the least. It is currently at various publishing houses, we are just waiting to hear back.
Kathleen, the author, has taken my designs to focus groups around the world and this has encouraged some very positive feedback. There seems to be quite a demand for this kind of book, as both an academic tool and as an interesting gift for people who are interested in reading around that subject area.

I haven't been involved in the blog, thats Kathleen's baby. However, the whole aesthetic of the book is mine.

Conferencing

Colleagues may be interested to hear about two conferences that I'll be speaking at in partnership with Jez Collins.

The first conference is 'Mapping, Memory and the City'. This takes place this week at Liverpool University (http://www.liv.ac.uk/lsa/cityinfilm/mappingmemory/index.html).

The second is 'Cybercultures: exploring Critical Issues' which takes place in Salzberg in two weeks time (http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/critical-issues/cyber/cybercultures/conference-programme-abstracts-and-papers/).

At both events we are speaking on some of the issues presented by the Birmingham Popular Music Archive project which was supported by our AHRC-funded Knowledge Transfer project.

Further to our REF session last week, colleagues will no doubt be interested in the abstracts and draft papers that we submitted, both available at each conference site.

I have someone coming all the way from Japan to chat with me on Weds afternoon. I think she’s some sort of media consultant. That’s it!

Out of the blue I will be having seven or eight visitors from Saudi Arabia in the School on Wednesday. They are in Birmingham meeting various groups and have asked to meet me to talk about working with the media as a result of the PVE workshops we ran for the City Council.
